“The Place of isolation can become the place of revelation.”

-Steven Furtick

We who live in the western world today live in a world with more “things” than ever before. More TV shows, more movies, more games, more technology, more toys, more gadgets, more sports, more loves, more conflicts, and more…. distractions. Now I am not saying that any of those things I just listed are inherently bad. What I am trying to do is call us to awareness. Because in this world full of more and more stuff, it is so easy to be distracted. And you see the problem with distraction, is that it is one of Satan’s greatest tools against our relationship with God.

We know that Satan does not want us to be close to God, that has been apparent since Genesis 3. The very first thing he ever did was pull Adam and Eve’s focus away from what was true so that he could make them question God’s goodness and bring sin into the world. And he still does this today. Satan does not want you to be close to God. He fears what you would become. He fears what we become when we live as heirs with Christ! So he will do anything and everything to try and shift your focus or lead you away from God.

Now sometimes this is easy to see but at other times the distraction is so subtle that if we are not vigilant and actively seeking God we will not even realize we are being distracted. And this goes back to all of the things I listed previously. They are not bad things inherently (in fact many of them are great things that can be used to glorify God), but if we are not careful even good things can lead to distraction.

And it is almost hilarious to me because an example of this is happening in my life right now. This truth is so real that even as I am writing this I find myself being distracted by the other tabs open on my computer, my phone, social media, even the coca-cola can in front of me! This is real y’all! If you are seeking God Satan is going to try and bog you down and pull your focus away from what is true and good. And here is why.

God wants to be with you. He wants to walk with you. He wants to speak to you. He wants you to be a part of the amazing and incredible mind blowing things He has in store! And we know that Satan does not want you to have any part in that, so he will throw everything and the kitchen sink at you in an attempt to keep you from spending time ALONE with God.

And that is what I want the end focus to be on. ALONE time with God. This seems to be one of the greatest struggles that I have seen for western Christians. It is far easier (and far less vulnerable) for us to go to church and bible study and say that is where God is going to speak to us the most. Now DO NOT hear me saying that community is bad. That is not what I am saying here! What I am trying to get at and expose here is that there a many believers out there who do not set a time aside in their days for communion with God and it is killing their souls. Because God does speak to us through community and through small groups and there is great Joy and meaning found in community, but God also longs for your personal and intimate relationship with Him. He wants intimacy with you. Just think about that. The creator of the universe wants relationship and intimacy with you. With all of us, His children. It is when we are alone with God that He can fill us the most.

Jesus knew this truth well. He knew that for God to work through Him He needed to work in Him. Often in scripture we find Jesus purposely getting away from the crowds to go into the wilderness and pray and spend time with His Father. Just one example is found in Matthew 14:22-23

“22 Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23 And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone,”

We were made to be in communion with the Father. It is through Him and our relationship with Jesus Christ that we are restored from death to life and are satisfied in our souls. Before He can work through us, He has to do His work in us.

So what are you letting separate you from God?

Maybe it’s spending too much time on social media, TV, games, Youtube.

Maybe it’s focusing too much on your circumstances and not on the one who has authority over all things.

Whatever it is, bring it to Him and lay it at the cross. Ask Him to give you wisdom in this area and to show you how you are being distracted and pulled away from Him. Ask Him to give you a longing for His word in your spirit and to keep you focused on His Word. And ask that He would help you seek Him with your whole heart.

7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. Matthew 7:7-8
