Praying the Beatitudes 1-4

During the Friday of this week and next week we are going to take a break from breaking down the beatitudes and we are going to pray through them. This week we will pray through the first four and next Friday we will pray through the last four. When we pray through scripture it’s like praying the mind of God. It is something I love to do on a regular basis. The goal is to read the scripture and pray whatever you feel God is speaking to you. I am going to give us an idea on how to do that, but also want to give you the freedom to pray whatever it is God may lay on your own heart.

Let’s pray!

“And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

God help us to understand what it means to be poor in spirit, to be humble, to see that we need you more than we can ever realize. Help us to not see ourself greater than we should. God help us to see that everyone is created in the image of yourself and that we should treat them with value. Help us to have the humility of Christ!

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”

God help us to learn to lament. Help us to see those times when we need to mourn with those who are mourning. Not to be quick to justify should or would we mourn, but to see people as created beings with a soul and spirit. Help us to empathize and sympathize when appropriate. Help us to lean in and listen. Help us to love and mourn the way you love and mourn when your sons and daughters are hurting.

“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”

Lord, help us to walk in the strength of meekness. Help us to be strong in spirit but meek in reaction. Help us to walk with a subtle strength that comes from our dependence and faith in You and not from any form of hubris. God may we have the heart and eyes of Jesus to feel and see the way Jesus does. To be strong yet soft.

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.”

Jesus help us to come to the place where we hunger for you and we thirst for righteousness. May we hunger as a person who is on a fast and may we thrist as a person who is walking in the desert of life. Father help us to not try and fill those needs with the things of this world but only by those things that come from the creator God, the Savior Jesus, and the empowerment of the Holy Spirit.

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭5:2-6‬

Spend some time in prayer this morning praying through those things that Jesus spoke in the first four beatitudes. May the Holy Spirit speak life into your life today and may that translate into people seeing and feeling the love of Christ! In Jesus Name! Amen!
